Top Blockchain University: University of California, Los Angeles

Ranked 25th, the California institution is intertwining blockchain, academics and athletics.

University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) offers students several courses that touch on blockchain technology across disciplines, including engineering, law and public affairs.

In comparative literature, students can take a course called “Blockchain: Future of Absolutely Everything,” which looks at the cultural background and impact of crypto in addition to its social and scientific aspects.

UCLA has its own student-led blockchain society – Blockchain at UCLA – that makes educational events and research opportunities available to undergraduates, graduates and staff. Students design and deliver courses. The group holds weekly events with representatives from the industry outside the institution.

On top of that, it has a Law and Blockchain Association connected to the law school. That club arranges its own program of events, helping students interested in blockchain to connect with attorneys, academics and entrepreneurs.

UCLA has a strong academic presence in the field of cryptography, and the research arm of global tech firm NTT began a partnership with the university last year that will support cryptographic research over five years.

UCLA made sports headlines in September 2021 when basketball star Jaylen Clark announced via YouTube that he would become the first college athlete to launch a cryptocurrency of his own (via the Rally platform). The coin will be used mainly for fan interactions, such as ticket giveaways.

Los Angeles has grown into a hub of blockchain and cryptocurrency activity. Firms located in the city include exchange and custodian Gemini and software company ConsenSys. LA Blockchain Week in 2020 attracted thousands of investors, entrepreneurs and assorted enthusiasts from all over the world with events like the beer-oriented “Blocktoberfest.”
